I have another technique today that will help you use up some of those "scrap" strips of Designer Series Paper (DSP). For today's card I used products from the Waterside Retreat Suite Collection.
This card is for the lake life-lover in your life. Maybe they love to fish. Maybe they love to paddle around the lake in a canoe or kayak. Or maybe they just like to sit in an old worn chair and enjoy the beauty of the lake.
The left panel of the card was made using the Twisted Ribbon Technique and the fish & waves DSP patterns from the Waterside Retreat DSP.
I planned to make a video showing you how the Twisted Ribbon Technique is done, but then I got so busy over the holiday that I decided to do a bit of relaxing myself. So, I found this older video that I created some time ago showing the technique. If the technique is new to you, this video will show you how to do it.
The video is old, but the technique hasn't changed. However, I sure have! I've acquired a lot more wrinkles since then! But I kind of like my hair color. I may have to try that again!
After backing the Country Woods DSP with Early Espresso Cardstock for stiffness, the chair was die cut with a Relaxing Waterside Die. The Life Ring and Paddle were also backed with Basic White cardstock for stiffness before they were fussy cut from the Waterside Retreat DSP.
The decoration and coordination for the inside of the card also came by using a strip of the water design and a fussy cut fish from the Waterside Retreat DSP.
All sentiments are from the Relaxing Waterside Stamp Set. I chose "generic" greetings from the set, so I can personalize it later when the specific occasion is known.
If you are wondering, the embossing folder that I used on the Petal Pink background is called High Seas, but it is retired. Use any embossing folder you have!
I've mentioned previously that I belong to a "Coffee Club" where each month we have a card challenge.
This month our challenge was to make a shaped card. This was not the card I made for our club challenge, but I decided to use the "shaped-card" idea for today's card.
I used the Banner Dies to create my shape. You can use any large die you may have to create your own shape.
If you want to make a SHAPED CARD watch this week's video to see how I did it. I'll also show you how I created a few of the Gears & Texture elements using various techniques.
This card uses several different techniques like water coloring, dry & heat embossing, ink blending and more. As a result it definitely is not a card to make when you are in a hurry. Make it when you have time to enjoy just playing with ink and paper. Personally, I think it is worth the time as I really like the end result.
The Banner card base is made using one of my favorite "neutral" colors, Blackberry Bliss. It seems work with almost any other color! In addition to Blackberry Bliss, colors used in the collage are Basic Beige, Pool Party, Smokey Slate and white (embossing powder), and various colors or "silver" foil. It's also a great way to use those tiny foil scraps we paper crafters tend to hoard!
This Gears & Textures Bundle is perfect for making masculine cards. Since the stamp set does not include sentiments, I used this great greeting from Natures Symphony.
For the inside of the card I created a small collage in the lower left corner of the flag and used several of the same stamps that were used for the background on the card front.
Since the greeting "to a great guy" could easily be used for many different occasions, I purposely left the inside sentiment free. I'll add one when I determine what it will be used for.
Be sure to watch the video if you decide to make a shaped card and to learn more about which techniques I used for the elements.
For all the dimensions and detailed step-by-step directions use this link to download a PDF Tutorial that you can "save for later". It also includes the link to the video.
Don't let the long list of supplies scare you off from trying a Shaped Card. Obviously my card does use a variety of tools and supplies, but remember, substitute what you have to create your own version. A list of the products I used is shown below.
Who finds making masculine cards challenging? I do! This week I am going to feature a bundle that is great for making cards for those guys in our life. It is called Nature's Symphony. It even includes "manly" sentiments!
The Nature's Symphony Bundle is part of the Nature Walk Suite Collection. Today I am using one of the Designer Series Paper (DSP) Collections from the Suite, Nature Walk. This paper is gorgeous! To keep the focus of my card on the beautiful watercolored stem, I chose two designs from the DSP Collection that are more on the subtle side. But be sure to check out the Nature's Walk DSP using the link in the product list below to see all the wonderful (and more colorful) designs.
I used the large leaf die from Nature's Symphony Dies to die cut a leaf from Watercolor paper and from Vellum.
HINT: When you die cut Vellum with this die, add a piece of wax paper between the die and the vellum. It will help to release the vellum from this very detailed die. (I learned that the hard way!)
For the water-colored leaf on the card front I used three different blue inks, Pretty Peacock, Lost Lagoon & Pool Party, to create an ombre effect. The stem was colored with Crumb Cake with touches of Pecan Pie to give it some pops of color.
For the water-colored leaf on the inside of the card I simplified my process and did not use Lost Lagoon.
Honestly, I determined I could create the ombre effect by creating darker and lighter shades of each by going over some areas twice. Either way works. You choose which you prefer?
Do you have a visual preference of which one you like? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
