LET'S MAKE 3 CARDS

I stated on my Monday post that this week is all about Last Minute Christmas Cards.  If you are running behind, or even if you just counted your cards and found out you are a few cards short, then you are going to want to keep reading.

It takes about as long to make these three cards as it takes to make one card!  So, if you need some last-minute, quick cards, use this STACK & CUT TECHNIQUE.

All you need to do is select 3 coordinating designs from your favorite Christmas Designer Series Paper (DSP).  Cut them to size (see the tutorial for the dimensions I used) and then cut the stack into three pieces.  

The number of cards you can make at once depends on the capability of your paper trimmer, but I would recommend that you limit your stack to a maximum of 4 different designs of DSP.  When you cut the stack it is important to insure that the pieces do not slide while you cut because you need the smaller cut shapes to all be the same.  If they are not, then as you mix & match, they may not fit together correctly.  

My personal experimentation found that when I tried to cut more than 4 layers of DSP at the same time, they were more likely to slide as I cut them.


Once you have your stack cut into three pieces, mix and match to create three different combinations.

NOTE:  If you decide to use 4 different DSP designs, you need to cut the stack into 4 pieces and you will then make four cards.

If you cut your stack into rectangular or square pieces, you can use both sides of the DSP as you mix and match.  However, if you cut the stack into pieces that have shapes with non-90 degree corners (like I did), you will need to use the all designs that were face-up when cutting.

I used the Traditions of Christmas DSP for my stack.  I could have used all the same color mats, but I decided to use three different colors.  I chose three colors from my DSP -- Real Red, Old Olive & Secret Sea.  You can see all three colors in the first photo, but for the rest of the photos I am showing the Secret Sea card.  Everything other than the mats is basically the same on all three cards.


Oh, I did have to change the color my Traditional Sparkling Sequins because I ran out of red, but you can make all three cards exactly the same or change up cardstock colors and embellishments as you like.  


I coordinated the color of the mat on the inside of each card with the mat color on the front, but I used the same floral DSP on all cards as well as on the envelope flap.

The inside sentiment is also from the Traditional Labels stamp set.  The Merry & Christmas sentiments are separate stamps, but I mounted them on the same block so stamped them at the same time.  This speeds up the process even more.

TRADITIONS OF CHRISTMAS FUN FOLD

Rather than featuring a particular product this week, I've decided to share Fun Fold Cards.  I love making fun folds.  They are always a great way to show off pretty Designer Series Paper (DSP).

And the DSP, Traditions of Christmas, on today's cards is one of my favorites this Christmas.  I'm hooked and can't stop finding new ways to use it.

I received a card from a fellow demonstrator a while back that used this particular fun fold.  I'm not sure what its "official" name is or even if it has a name, so I'm going to call it an Interweave Fun Fold.

The card is basically made from two cards -- a larger card and a smaller card that Interweave with each other when they are closed.  The larger portion is made of DSP so is great to show off both sides of pretty paper.  One my card you can see the Secret Sea pattern from one side and the red and pink poinsettias with pool party gold foiling on the opposite side.

The small card is a complete card in itself that is adhered to the large card front and interweaves with the DSP card.

I decorated the front of the small card with a Sentimental Framing die cut from Brushed Gold Foil.  The floral bouquet was die cut from the Traditions of Christmas DSP.

When you open the small card and then the DSP card, this is what you see.

You could mount this interweave card to a 5-1/2" x 4-1/4" piece of cardstock and call it good.  But I wanted a little more space to write my Christmas message, so I adhered it to the front of the standard Cherry Cobbler A2 card base.  

Much of this card was made with "leftovers" from other cards so that made it quick and easy.

The Gold Foil Sentimental Frame was a die cut I had in my stash.  When I use foil, or other more pricey cardstock I try to stretch it as far as I can, so I had die cut this from the center of a foil mat.  I have several of these "leftover" die cut flower bouquets because when I received this Traditions of Christmas I die cut all of these images from the paper.  The sentiment on the inside was also a "leftover" from another card. 

It's kind of like leftovers from Thanksgiving Dinner.  They are still good and sometimes they are even better the 2nd day!  These paper leftovers were great because they made making this card very quick to put together.

TWO-TONE CHRISTMAS WREATH

This week I will be featuring cards made with Two-Tone Cardstock.  I've been "collecting" it since I was first introduced to it last March at OnStage, but I haven't been using it much.  So, I thought maybe using it as a "featured product" might get me motivated.  If you haven't yet started exploring Two-Tone cardstock I'm hoping this week's cards will give you a reason to explore using it, too.

Fortunately Stampin' Up! has several different variety packs.  That's how I started.  That way I could get a few different colors without a huge investment of buying a pack of each color.

The Granny Apple Green is included in a collection called Memories in Bloom.  It includes six different colors -- Darling Duckling, Granny Apple Green, Petunia Pop, Secret Sea, Summer Splash & Timid Tiger.  I liked this pack because not only did I get a variety of two-tone colors, but it also gave me many of the current In-Colors.

There are some things that you can do with Two-Tone cardstock that you cannot do with regular cardstock.  

One side of the two-tone cardstock is the shade of the regular cardstock and the opposite side is a lighter shade of the same color.  Stampin' Up!'s two-tone cardstock also has a white core which makes it great for tearing and sanding.

My card today uses Granny Apple Green Two-Tone, and I have the darker side facing up.

I embossed Granny Apple Green Two-Tone with the Traditional Wreath Embossing Folder and then used a sanding block to lightly sand the peaks of the embossed surface.  Sanding makes the embossed surface pop because it reveals the white inner core.

Since the wreath embossing folder is a 6" x 6" folder, I decided to make a square card.  I don't make many square cards any more, but it allowed more of the complete wreath circle to show.

I used the Traditional Labels Bundle to create a simple sentiment.  I liked how the plaid from  the Traditional Christmas Designer Series Paper gave a bit of a "country vibe" so I used that to mat the sentiment.  A couple of Gold Foil pine boughs die cut with a die from Christmas Greenery dies add a little shimmer peeking out from behind the plaid.  A Shiny Real Red Ribbon bow and Red Traditional Sparkling Sequins add a little more traditional red sparkle to the card.


For the inside of the card I reduced the width of my Basic White message layer to allow more of the embossed Granny Apple Green Two-Tone to show.  A strip of the plaid DSP and another Gold Foil Pine Bough coordinate the inside with the card front.

CHRISTMAS GREENERY BOUQUET

The technique for today's card uses tissue paper and Ink Refills to create a beautiful background.

The colors I used were Cherry Cobbler, Pool Party and Bubble Bath.  I pulled the color combination from the Traditions of Christmas Designer Series Paper (DSP).  If you ever have trouble coming up with color combinations use your DSP as inspiration.


I shared this Tissue Paper and Ink Refills technique some time ago on my Learning with Friends Video series.  If you are unfamiliar with it this video will show you how it is done.  It's fun, easy, and not too messy.  For this card I purposely left some white space within the colored areas.


The focal point was die cut from the Traditions of Christmas DSP.  I love DSP that has images that coordinate with dies.  One of the dies in the Christmas Greenery Bundle coordinates with this particular floral bouquet in the DSP.   The sentiment and coordinating die are from the Traditional Labels Bundle.

The Traditions of Christmas Suite includes all of these products and more.


Do you like to make bows from ribbon?  Are you good at it?  I make them because I love the look of pretty ribbon, but I struggle to make nice bows.  This Pool Party bow was easy peasy!  It's made with three dies from the Christmas Greenery dies.

Do you notice the shadow around the flower bouquets?  I wasn't really satisfied with the look of the flowers when I placed them directly over the tissue paper background.  It needed something to give it a little pop.  I die cut two more of the flower bouquets from cardstock to create the "shadow".  I experimented with all three of the colors in the background, but none of them were giving me the extra "pop" that I wanted.  Then I decided to try Secret Sea cardstock, and I found the winner.  I purposely kept the border very narrow as I didn't want it to overwhelm the image.  I just wanted it to look like a shadow, and Secret Sea did that for me.


To decorate the inside of the card I fussy cut some additional images from the Traditions of Christmas DSP.  I like to use images from the edges of the paper for this purpose as it is a great way to use partial images that may otherwise be tossed away.
