SQUIRRELS IN THE ASPENS

Today I combined the Nuts about Squirrels stamp set with the Aspen Trees Dies.

This was definitely the quickest and easiest card of the week!  But isn't it pretty?  It's so nice when you have pretty designer series paper and the right tools to make a quick card.

The designer paper behind the trees is from the Rain or Shine Designer Series Paper (DSP) Collection.  All I had to do was cut the Basic White cardstock with the die from Aspen Trees Dies to create my woods.

The coordinating stamp set, Perched in a Tree, and these dies were first introduced in the July - December Mini catalog.  But I was so excited to see that they are carrying over, so they are still available if you missed out on them last fall.

Once the trees were die-cut, I layered them over the DSP and mounted it to my Balmy Blue card base.

All that was left was to stamp my little squirrel on a Basic White scrap and fussy cut him.  That was the longest part of making this card.

The cute little tag for the sentiment is from Designer Tag Dies.  A double bow of linen thread completed the card front.

In keep with my mantra of "no naked insides", I added a leftover strip of the Rain or Shine DSP to the right side of the Basic White cardstock.

When I was making the card front, I wasn't sure if I wanted two squirrels or one.  I had thought about having one behind the trees, but I couldn't make it work.  Since I had stamped one of each squirrel, I had a spare, so I just tucked him on the inside of my card.

SQUIRRELS ON FIRE (Not Really)

Last week on our Connect to Create YouTube Channel, my friend and Connect to Create Collaborator, Kathi, showed us the Faux Wood Burning Technique.

This was a brand-new technique to me, so I was anxious to try it.  This was my first attempt.  I obviously need more practice with the technique, but in general I liked how my card turned out, so I decided to share it with you today.

If you missed last week's Connect to Create Video, you can watch the replay here.  Kathi's cards are awesome, so I hope you will check them out and see what the Faux Wood Burning technique is really supposed to look like.  LOL

After I burned my little squirrel, into my "wood".  I decided to try to also "burn" the edges of my Designer Tag.  I'm not sure how much the edges really look like they were burned, but I do think it added some interest to the tag.

The designer series paper on the background of this card is from Fancy Flora Designer Series Paper (DSP).  This is very interesting paper!  It has many beautiful and bright color combinations (not necessarily this particular one) and appears to be painted with thick oil paints.  I liked the brown tones of this pattern for a card that was all about wood burning.

At first, I was going to use Soft Suede or Crumb Cake for my card base, but then decided that there was way too much brown, and it needed some life.  So, I pulled the So Saffron color from the DSP.  Don't forget to use your designer series paper for color inspiration!

The ribbon is a soft neutral color I found in my stash.

To decorate the inside of the card, I simply used another strip of the same designer series paper.  The inside sentiment is from Inspired Thoughts -- one of my favorite versatile sentiment sets.

SQUIRREL FRIENDS

Have you ever purchased a stamp set for one particular purpose with no thought of what else you would use it for?  Well, this week's featured stamp set was one of those purchases for me.

I bought the Nuts About Squirrels stamp set for one reason only.  When I was making my Remembering Baxter Scrapbook, I knew I wanted to include a page about Baxter's relationship with the Bad Ol' Squirrels.  If you followed my series late last year where we journeyed down memory lane with Baxter, you may have seen the page where I used this stamp set.

And honestly, other than for Baxter's Scrapbook. I have used this stamp set maybe one other time.   So, this week I decided it was time to see what other ideas I could come up with using the Nuts About Squirrels stamp set.

Since squirrels like to hang out in trees, it seemed fitting that I try to incorporate the Tree Rings Dies and the coordinating Hybrid Embossing Folder into my "squirrel" project, and today's card is the card I came up with.

To create the background for this card I used the Tree Ring die as a mask.  I laid the die over Crumb Cake cardstock and then with my Sponge Dauber and a little Soft Suede ink I inked around the inner edges of each tree ring.  I then aligned the rings in the Tree Rings Embossing Folder and embossed the cardstock.

The common brown squirrels that we have where I live were not showing up very well on my tree rings, so I decided I would make red squirrels.  I was fairly sure there was such a thing, but since I've never seen one, I consulted my friend Google to make sure there really is such a critter.  And, yes, they are real, but I also learned that there are only about 140,000 of them left, and they are mostly in Europe and Asia.  Here in the US, they can be found in Alaska, the Rocky Mountains, and on the east coast north of Georgia.

OK, enough about red squirrels...  Since the pictures of them looked sort of rust colored, I decided to use Cajun Craze.  Close enough!  But no matter the color, I know Baxter would not have liked them!

The bottom squirrel's name is Cajun and the one up on the tree branch that looks a little mischievous, I decided to name Craze.  Doesn't Craze look like he is ready to pounce on Cajun and steel his nut?

The majority of the greenery on the card was made with the Twigs and Sprigs Embossing Folder and Die.  What a quick and effortless way to get lots of Twigs and Sprigs all with one run through the Stampin' Cut & Emboss Die Cut Machine!

I made my Twigs and Sprigs from Granny Apple Green cardstock and then used a sponge dauber to highlight the embossed areas a bit with Granny Apple Green ink.  It added some depth to the leaves.

You will also see some little copper leaves tucked among the sprigs to add just hint of shimmer and shine.  It's hard for me to not add at least a little sparkle to a card.  These Leaves Trinkets are retired, but I still have some left, so I decided to use them.

I let Craze visit the inside of my card and Cajun was happy to be on the envelope.  What do you think about my masculine birthday card?  At least now I can say I used the stamp set for more than Baxter's Scrapbook Page.  I hope you'll come back to see what else I come up with this week.
